As the demand exceeds the supply, the price of material shrimp in Mekong Delta has been increasing for many months.
Currently, black tiger shrimp (type: 20 items/kg) increases to VND 190,000 – 200,000/kg, type 30 items/kg is VND 160,000 items/kg. Particularly, price of vannamei is VND 55,000 – 60,000/kg. Many farmers states this is the record hit for 10 years.
The shortage of raw material is still popular in seafood factories in Mekong Delta. Many factories have to work with only 20% - 30% of their capacity.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the cultivating seafood (shrimp mainly) of the country in 5 months of 2010 only reaches 872,000 tons, reducinng 5.2 % in comparison to that of year 2009.
Face up with the situation of serious shortage of material, many factories have changed into manufacturing other products.
